BUCKLAND, Mass. (AP) — A senior writer for ESPN denies allegations that he assaulted his wife and resisted arrest.

State police say 42-year-old Howard Bryant was arrested in front of a pizza parlor Saturday in Buckland in western Massachusetts. Witnesses told police they saw a man choking and pinning a woman against a parked car.

Police say Bryant struck a state trooper in the chest with his elbow.

Bryant told The Associated Press that he and his wife had a verbal argument but that he didn't assault her. He says he repeatedly told police he was not resisting arrest.

Bryant pleaded not guilty Monday. He lives in nearby Ashfield.

His wife, Veronique, told ESPN.com she was not abused by her husband.
