Several updates and renovations have revitalized the Alerus Center in Grand Forks and there are a few more to come. The facility has added flooring, space and windows over the past year. Now it's on to a project that's been in the works for a while.

You may have noticed quite a few changes to the Alerus Center over the past year. As projects begin to wrap up, the final step is to add an escalator.

"We had a bid out last year, unfortunately it didn't work out. We bid it this year and we awarded the contract to ICS and they will start construction I believe June 1st. One escalator on the main grand staircase," Alerus Center Director of Operations Jeremy Linstad said.

The escalator project is estimated to cost around $480,000, which Linstad says will help crowds move a little faster.

"With the elevators right now, we have two elevators which you know are a little on the slow side. This will help with a lot of the personnel to move traffic in and out," Linstad said.

Toward the end of last year, the Alerus Center spent $500,000 on suite and flooring renovations, adding space and windows down a hallway that used to be dark.

"Upstairs in our club or suite level, the club, natural lighting was a plus and then functionality with turning some of the end suites into club suites," Linstad said.

New signage and conference center expansions added over the past year gave the building a facelift. Linstad is excited about all the changes, including those yet to come.

"Slowly going over repainting and doing some new furnishings over the year. Smaller items that really give it a whole new look. So after 10 years, just giving it a refresh," Linstad said.

The Alerus gets approval through the city for projects and has a five-year outlook on what they want to get done based on funding.
