Pothole Season: Area Streets a Bit More Bumpy

This time of year is one of the worst times for roads around the area. The freezing and thawing make for a few more bumps in the road.

Those bumps, potholes and dips are starting to create problems on Grand Forks city streets.

"When we have a thaw like 2-3 weeks ago, it's not good for streets because the water gets below it and it freezes and it pops the asphalt off. That's where potholes come from," GF Streets Superintendent Mark Aubol said.

Aubol says with the continued warming and freezing, we could see some more rocky roads.

"If it would warm up real quick, then we can do a permanent fix on them but sometimes it's a temporary patch. As it freezes and thaws and keeps popping them out, we'll continue to keep patching them," Aubol said.

For areas like Columbia Road and 32nd Avenue, these bumps are caused by faulty concrete, which is causing the concrete to actually move.
