WINNIPEG - A battle is about to get underway to stop a tiny and sometimes painful six-legged enemy that's been invading homes and businesses across Manitoba.

The provincial government is ready to unveil a (Canadian) $770,000 strategy for the first year of an ongoing blitz to get the upper hand on bedbugs.

The plan includes a website and telephone hotline, as well as a coalition of municipalities, health authorities and business groups that will find a common solution to the problem.

Qualifying organizations will also have access to specialized materials to help combat bedbugs at low cost, including mattress and box-spring encasements, specialized laundry bags and insect monitors.

The strategy does not include mandatory public reporting of places that have bedbugs, which had been requested by paramedics and other professionals who must go into homes and buildings.

The bedbug fight comes as governments across Canada and the United States look for the best way to fight the parasites that were regarded as rare in North America as recently as a decade ago.
