Vote on Fighting Sioux Nickname Possible Friday

Senators are being flooded with e-mail on the issue. Stenehjem says some members have gotten more than 1,500 messages, and the e-mail traffic has overwhelmed regular business.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Senate may be deciding the Fighting Sioux nickname issue on Friday.

The bill is listed on the Senate's business calendar Friday. Senate Republican majority leader Bob Stenehjem of Bismarck says he won't rule out the possibility of a Friday vote.

The legislation would require the University of North Dakota to keep its Fighting Sioux nickname and its logo, which shows the profile of an American Indian warrior.

Senators are being flooded with e-mail on the issue. Stenehjem says some members have gotten more than 1,500 messages, and the e-mail traffic has overwhelmed regular business.

Normally, the bill wouldn't come up until next week, because at least three senators are absent. They're on a state trip to Denmark to look at the country's ethanol production.
