FARGO — Fargo defeated Grand Rapids, Mich., to advance from the first round of The Weather Channel’s “Toughest Weather City Tournament.”
In online voting, Fargo received 18,382 votes, or 89.8 percent, to Grand Rapids’ 2,095 votes, or 10.2 percent.
The matchup highlighted Fargo’s 48 days of subzero cold, 14 days of 90-plus heat and the spring flood risk, with four of the city’s top seven floods occurring since 2001.
Fargo will square off in the second round against Marquette, Mich., which beat Detroit in the first round of the Midwest Region. Second-round voting runs until 4 a.m. Friday.
Also advancing from the first round were Minneapolis-St. Paul over Dodge City, Kan.; Rapid City, S.D., over Louisville, Ky.; International Falls, Minn., over Green Bay, Wis.; Duluth, Minn., over Des Moines, Iowa; Chicago over St. Louis; and Kansas City, Mo., over Indianapolis.
