JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Supreme Court says a lawyer and longtime activist with the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party has died at the age of 85.

James Jungroth served in the North Dakota Legislature and on the State Water Commission. He also was a past chairman of the Democratic-NPL Party.

The Forum reports that the Jamestown native attended Jamestown College and graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1950.

During World War II, he volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943 and served as an aircraft mechanic.

As president of the North Dakota Wildlife Federation in the early 1970s, he expressed concerns about coal strip mining, a cause that prompted him to run for the U.S. Senate in 1974 on a conservation platform.
