FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota State University is making plans to serve as an emergency shelter for horses if a major spring flood hits the Fargo area.

Carrie Hammer, NDSU's equine studies director, tells Prairie Public Radio that it the third consecutive year that the school has offered to shelter horses.

Hammer says there is small fee to house a horse at the NDSU barn and owners are responsible for providing feed. The shelter service will begin operations when the Red River reaches 35-feet in the Fargo area.
