The Walsh County State's Attorney has decided that current sheriff Lauren Wild did not do anything wrong during last year's election campaign.

Four people asked the State's Attorney to look at Sheriff Wild's campaign practices during the last election when he faced off against Ron Nord and the special election going on now.

They questioned whether the sheriff was illegally using public property and services for political gain, things like wearing his sheriff's uniform while campaigning and putting up campaign signs on public property.

State's Attorney Barb Whelan says in a letter back to the four people that Wild is allowed to wear his sheriff's uniform while campaigning.

Whelan says she told Wild to take campaign signs that were around the fairground down, which he promptly did, and that she did not charge him with a crime.

The four people also asked Whelan if it was illegal for Sheriff Wild to drive the sheriff's car to pick up campaign buttons.

Whelan says he's on call all the time and has to be ready to respond to an emergency, so it's not illegal.

The special election will be held April 12th.
