Notorious ND Sex Offender Pleads Guilty to New Crime

The first person to be prosecuted in federal court in North Dakota for failing to register as a sex offender has pleaded guilty to another sex crime.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The first person to be prosecuted in federal court in North Dakota for failing to register as a sex offender has pleaded guilty to another sex crime.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says 35-year-old Gerard Lovejoy Sr. of Tokio faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced June 13 on the charges of sexual abuse and commission of a federal sex offense by a registered sex offender.

Authorities say Lovejoy had sex with a juvenile who was sleeping in a Fort Yates home last September.

LoveJoy also has a 1997 sex crime conviction. In January 2008, he was sentenced to a year and a day in prison for failing to register as a sex offender. Prosecutors said it was the first such case brought in federal court in North Dakota.
