BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota lawmaker wants to make sure funeral protesters have to stand at least 1,000 feet away from any funeral.

Fargo Rep. Bette Grande's proposal is in response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling this month.

The high court ruled members of a fundamentalist church have a free-speech right to protest at funerals — but states may regulate where the protesters can stand.

North Dakota law now says funeral protests have to be at least 300 feet away from the service. Grande says that distance should be lengthened to 1,000 feet.

The Senate Judiciary Committee endorsed the proposal Tuesday. It has been attached to an unrelated bill that regulates use of security cameras. Now it goes to the full Senate for a vote.
