ND House Wants to Help Legislators Get Government Jobs

A North Dakota constitutional amendment would make it easier for state lawmakers to get top government appointments.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota constitutional amendment would make it easier for state lawmakers to get top government appointments.

The North Dakota House voted 87-5 on Wednesday to approve a constitutional amendment to make the change. The proposal now goes to the state Senate for its review.

North Dakota's Constitution now says a lawmaker can't have a state appointment if the job got a pay increase while the legislator was in office.

The proposed change says the legislator is eligible for the job if the pay goes up, but the raise has to be in line with what is given to other state employees.

Grand Forks Rep. Lonny Winrich (WIN'-rick) says a number of top state jobs have come open in recent years, and the constitution has barred legislators from being considered.
