Higher Ed Board Ready to Meet with NCAA on Sioux Nickname

Officials from the North Dakota Board of Higher Education are hoping to set up meetings with the NCAA on recent legislative developments with the UND's Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

Officials from the North Dakota Board of Higher Education are hoping to set up meetings with the NCAA on recent legislative developments with the UND's Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

North Dakota University System Chancellor Bill Goetz says UND President Robert Kelley has contacted the NCAA.

He's trying to get a better feel of how the athletic association feels about legislation requiring UND to keep its Fighting Sioux nickname, as well as information about future sanctions on UND.

Governor Jack Dalrymple signed off on this just weeks ago.

Goetz says political interference with the board of higher education is a concern.

"Really this is a state issue at this point. The legislature saw fit to pass the bill-both house and senate, and the governor signed it, and it really becomes a part of a whole different arena," Goetz said.

There is no set date for a meeting.
