With 2009 winding down, the budgets for some non-profit organizations are getting tighter. The Lake Region Heritage Center in Devils Lake is no exception, and is expected to be short money at least until the end of the year.
Just over two months ago the center got about $10 thousand from the city.
It's asked Ramsey County for emergency funding as well, since it's about $7 thousand short. Right now it gets a .25 mills from the county budget and it can legally ask for up to twice that. This would require a public vote, which could happen in June of 2010.
For now there are three people working at the Heritage Center who may temporarily be laid off.
George Zenk: "They're not all full-time, but we would rotate those three employees through one full-time position. They could at the same time then apply for unemployment."
After January 1 the Heritage Center will get monthly assistance from the city. It is also trying to raise money through a raffle and spaghetti feed.
