The state Board of Higher Education will meet by phone next week to talk about extending the October first deadline for a decision on UND's Fighting Sioux nickname.
As WDAZ was first to report earlier this week, the board is leaning toward extending the deadline at least a couple of weeks to give a new tribal council on the Standing Rock Reservation time to decide if it wants to act on the nickname.
Tribal elections are September 30th. The current council has refused to allow a reservation-wide vote and has re-affirmed its opposition to the nickname.
The state board of higher ed will meet by phone next thursday morning.
