FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Sandbag convoys with flatbed trucks escorted by police rolled out Tuesday in Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn.

The two cities plan to place millions of sandbags to defend against Red River flooding. Sandbag delivery is expected to take about four days.

Flood stage for the river is 18 feet. The National Weather Service expects the river to rise to 39 feet by Monday.

Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker says he's optimistic about managing the flood, even though the river is likely to rise to one of its highest levels in city history.

It's the third straight year of major flooding. The river set a record crest of 40.84 feet in 2009. Last year's crest of 36.99 feet was the sixth-highest on record.
