BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's college students are likely to get more information about how their fees are spent.
The North Dakota Senate unanimously approved a bill Wednesday that requires colleges to show where they spend fees. It also says fees can't increase by more than 1 percent of tuition per year, unless students request it.
The fee limit will last two years. Supporters hope to make it permanent in 2013.
The state Board of Higher Education's website will have to list fees charged by each college and how the money was spent.
Supporters say fees have rapidly increased while lawmakers only focused on tuition. Fees make up about 18 percent of the cost of attending a North Dakota college.
The House also passed the bill unanimously. It now waits for the governor's signature.
