BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple says a meeting with NCAA officials about the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname should be open to the public.

The NCAA's president plans to come to Bismarck April 22 to discuss the nickname with Board of Higher Education members and state officials. The NCAA considers the name hostile to American Indians, but the Legislature has ordered UND to keep it.

Board of Higher Education vice president Grant Shaft says the meeting will be closed. Dalrymple says there's no reason for a private meeting on the issue.

Dalrymple says the meeting will give the NCAA a chance to publicly discuss its reasons for opposing the Fighting Sioux nickname and the school's logo of an American Indian warrior.
