VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — About 150 volunteers turned out Thursday to help Valley City finish flood preparation with a final count of 148,000 sandbags.

The city of 6,500 people had set a target of 150,000 sandbags to fight a rising Sheyenne River.

The Valley City Tiimes-Record said students at Valley City State University were let out of class Thursday to help.

City Administrator Jon Cameron says high school students began placing sandbags on Wednesday.

The city also is installing Hesco sand-filled barriers and raising some earthen dikes.
