Five local families are officially a little bigger today.

The families took part in National Adoption Day and finalized the adoptions of 9 kids in our area.

The celebration was designed to draw attention to the 129 thousand foster children waiting for adoption across the United States and to celebrate all families who have adopted.

Today in Grand Forks, nine kids in the Adults Adopting Special Kids program were permanently placed with 5 families.

Parents finalizing the adoptions today say it has been a long road and they are excited for the adoptions to be finalized.

Carrie Raboin: "It's been fairly long for us because we started out with kinship care for a year and then we did foster care for over a year and then we switched to adoption."

Last year, there were 325 events and 4,300 adoptions finalized nationwide for National Adoption Day.
