James River Floods in New Rockford, ND

People in New Rockford are calling it the one-day flood, because waters from the James River came up and went down so fast and many weren't prepared.

Mayor Jim Belquist says when he talked to some homeowners on Saturday night, things were OK.

But by Sunday morning, a reverse 911 call was out asking for sandbaggers.

An ice jam was keeping the James River from flowing. That broke up sometime between Thursday and Saturday.

Belquist says the city did have about 1,500 sandbags pre-filled but it didn't take long before those were gone.

Some homes did get water in their basements and there is quite a bit of damage to some roads.

"We were just uncertain, it's just such a different year of course with the thaw and the ice and we just didn't know. It was totally different," said Belquist.
