When Will Bridges Open?

The weather service has revised the projected Red River crest in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks down again. So when will the bridges open?

The Red was at 49.47 at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.

It looks now that it will stay at or around that level. The cities remain well protected by permanent levees and floodwalls, although two of the three bridges connecting the towns are underwater.

The Point Bridge opens when water levels hit between 40 to 41 feet. The Sorlie Bridge opens between 43.5 to 44.5 feet.

But they won't open right away, because of inspections.

"The Point Bridge, we do that independently, but the Sorlie Bridge is on a state highway, so we have to have both DOT's concur that it's ready to be opened," said Grand Forks City Engineer Al Grasser.

Inspection crews will make sure there is not damage or debris on the bridge.

They expect the water level to be low enough for inspections sometime next week.
