A major highway in southern Manitoba is being closed due to flooding.

Highway 75 is the province's biggest trade route to the U.S., but rising water on the Red River and its tributaries is now making it impassable.

The road shut down at 2 p.m. Monday, a move that forced truckers to make extensive detours en route to American destinations.

Concerns about flooding on the Assiniboine River west of Winnipeg prompted states of emergency to be declared on the weekend in the municipalities of St. Francois Xavier, Cartier and Headingley.
