MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — New details are emerging about a Minnesota man awaiting trial on terror charges connected to the travels of roughly 20 men who went to Somalia to possibly fight for al-Shabab.
In a superseding indictment made public Thursday, authorities say 26-year-old Omer Abdi Mohamed and others held meetings at mosques, homes and other locations in Minneapolis to mobilize people to travel to Somalia.
It also says Mohamed and co-conspirators raised funds under false pretenses.
Mohamed was originally indicted in 2009 on three terror-related counts. The new indictment adds three counts of possessing a firearm during a crime of violence — alleging he was part of a conspiracy in which others used AK-47s in Somalia.
He has maintained his innocence. He's been on electronic monitoring while awaiting trial, set for July 19.
