CLOQUET, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota State Patrol says an intoxicated man died in a head-on collision near Cloquet after patrons at the bar where he was drinking tried to stop him from driving.

The State Patrol says the 33-year-old Cloquet man was driving the wrong way on Highway 21 after leaving a Carlton bar shortly before midnight Tuesday and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old woman. Patrol Sgt. Mark Baker says the woman suffered extensive injuries, but is expected to survive.

Authorities say bar patrons knew the man was drunk and tried to prevent him from driving. The man got in his car, drove across the lawn, hit a tree, then headed west on Highway 210.

The Star Tribune says witnesses called authorities with a description of the car and its license plate.
