GF Public Library One of Most Inefficient Buildings in City

An energy expert says the Grand Forks Public Library is one of the most inefficient buildings in the city and the library's heating and cooling system is in the top five least efficient such systems in Grand Forks.

An energy expert says the Grand Forks Public Library is one of the most inefficient buildings in the city and the library's heating and cooling system is in the top five least efficient such systems in Grand Forks.

Dave McFarlane with McFarlane, a sheet metal and environmental engineering company, says the library's energy costs are nearly $23,000 higher than they should be.

The dual duct system heats and cools at the same time. It's a type of system that typically lasts less than 30 years.

It was installed when the library was built in 1972.

Replacing it would mean gutting the building.

McFarlane says at one time, this system was top of the line, when energy cost very little. He says the library would have to be closed for about a year to complete the replacement of the system.
