An alcohol enforcement saturation and checkpoint will be conducted in Grand Forks and the surrounding area this weekend, May 6 and 7.

The sobriety checkpoint is being dedicated in the memory of Monte Zak, an East Grand Forks teen who was killed by a drunk driver in 2004.

A saturation is conducted by increasing the number of officers patrolling an area. Agencies will have additional officers out for patrol, funded through a program by the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

"It's important for people to be aware of drunk driving and this is a good way for people to get the message out to them," Monte's mother Joyce Zak said.

Last year, 105 people died in traffic accidents in North Dakota, just about half of which were alcohol-related.
