BELCOURT, N.D. (AP) — A tribally regulated waste facility near Belcourt that authorities say was improperly maintained is being cleaned up.

Indian Health Service solid waste coordinator Brent Rohlfs tells the Minot Daily News that a new manager is working to have unapproved waste removed from the site and to ensure incoming waste is properly screened. He says the manager also is addressing fees at the transfer station and disposal site that was losing money.

The site is regulated by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa but state and federal officials have been offering assistance. Steve Tillotson with the state Health Department says the manager and staff have received state training in waste management.

Rohlfs says there's no evidence that any environmental contamination occurred.
