A Grafton woman who authorities say was attacked by her husband with a metal hammer is now in satisfactory condition at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, a nursing supervisor said Monday night.

Police say Victoria Aasand was repeatedly struck with a metal hammer by her husband, 61-year-old Frank Aasand, on Friday, May 6.

Frank Aasand was charged with attempted murder and is being held without bail at the Walsh County Law Enforcement Center. According to the North Dakota Courts website, Aasand has not yet retained an attorney.

Authorities say Aasand struck Victoria with a metal hammer as she was sleeping early Friday morning. Aasand then called 911, but continued the assault, yelling obscenities throughout. Victoria sustained severe injuries and required emergency surgery, according to a criminal complaint.

Frank Aasand was arrested at the home on Friday without incident.

Attempted murder carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

In June of 2007, Aasand plead guilty and was found guilty of DUI.
