BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Health care, taxes and education are among the subjects North Dakota lawmakers will be studying as they begin preparing for the next session.
The 2011 Legislature ended less than two weeks ago, but on Tuesday the Legislature's management committee met to pick out topics to study for the next 18 months.
Forty-four studies were chosen. Many of them will be used to draft bills that will be presented to the 2013 Legislature.
House Republican majority leader Al Carlson says lawmakers will be looking at property taxes, education and the new federal health care law.
Carlson says lawmakers need to understand how the federal health law will affect the state's budget.
Senate Democratic leader Ryan Taylor says some study topics relating to children's services were passed over.
