The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office has identified the teenager who died after an early Saturday morning high-speed chase in Bemidji.
Morris Isaac Beaulieu Jr, 16, of Red Lake died as a result of his injuries.
Authorities say Beaulieu was a passenger in a car that was stopped at about 4:45 a.m. Saturday. The driver, Kevin Lee Green, 21, of Boy River, MN, was stopped and investigated for drunk driving.
According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, the deputy observed Beaulieu passed out in the right front seat of the car, and started to question Green.
Authorities say Beaulieu then slid behind the wheel of the vehicle. The deputy gave him verbal commands to get out, but Beaulieu made a u-turn and drove northbound on Bemidji Ave. at a very high rate of speed, according to the release.
A second deputy who was just arriving on the scene began to pursue Beaulieu as he fled. Two Bemidji police officers assisted in the pursuit as speeds reached up to 100 mph, with Beaulieu swerving from lane to lane.
Authorities say Beaulieu continued driving through Turtle River, MN, at high speeds and lost control of the vehicle in a curve north of that town. He left the roadway and rolled through a ditch and into trees. Beaulieu was thrown from the vehicle.
Officers who arrived at the scene began first aid and Bemidji Ambulance, along with the North Memorial Air Care helicopter responded.
Beaulieu was air-lifted to Essentia Health, in Fargo, where he died from his injuries.
Green was arrested for drunk driving.
