A new hotel being built by the Alerus Center may be the start of more new businesses in the area.

Ground has already been broken on a new Sleep Inn just South of the Alerus.

It may just look like a pile of dirt now...but by the end of the summer..there will be a new hotel.

"This is one of the first big steps that's taking place. The Sleep Inn is going to be coming in just to the South of the Alerus Center." public information officer Kevin Dean said.

The city has been talking about new developments on 42nd street for quite a while. The Sleep Inn is just the beginning.

"Certainly this could be the catalyst perhaps for maybe a restaurant or maybe some other type of lodging or some other type of nightclub or something along those lines." Dean said.

The Sleep Inn will have 3 floors with 80 rooms....helping the city have more space for travelers over weekends and big events.

"I think it'll be mutually beneficial certainly visitors to the area now have more options and when the CanadInn is full, as it frequently is, perhaps some of the visitors may utilize the new property." Alerus executive director Cheryl Swanson said.

The city is looking into other businesses that would be a good fit near The Alerus. Although officials aren't sure what developments will pop up on 42nd street. This first step is a good sign.

"It's always nice to have options, competition is a good thing to have in this town and we certainly encourage that." Dean said.

"Anytime there's more activity in an area I think we all benefit mutually with each other." Swanson said.

The hotel should be up and running sometime this fall.
