Pipe Bids Opened For Devils Lake East-end Outlet

The North Dakota Water Commission this week took a step toward construction of an east-end outlet on flooded Devils Lake

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Water Commission this week took a step toward construction of an east-end outlet on flooded Devils Lake.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the group opened four bids from companies who want to supply pipe. Staff and engineering consultants will review the bids and make recommendations to the commission. Dalrymple calls it "an important step forward."

Devils Lake already has a west-end outlet to drain floodwaters into the Sheyenne River. The state plans to build an east-end outlet to take even more water off the lake. Some legislators think the state should look at other options, and some downstream property owners fear a second outlet could worsen flooding in their area.
