ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A New York man has filed a lawsuit alleging he was sexually abused at a Bronx church in the 1960s by a priest who later became abbot of a Minnesota monastery and helped found an institute to deal with clergy sexual abuse.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Minnesota against the Order of St. Benedict and St. John's Abbey. It alleges that former Abbot Timothy Kelly abused the man when he was a teenage altar boy.

Kelly died in October. Attorney Jeffrey Anderson says the man decided to come forward after reading Kelly's obituary.

Two former monks at St. John's Abbey joined Anderson at a news conference, saying the monastery fosters a culture of sexual secrecy.

An abbey spokesman expressed shock at the allegations and says an investigation has begun.
