APPLE VALLEY, Minn. (AP) — A Mexican gray wolf was killed after it escaped from its enclosure at the Minnesota Zoo.

Zoo spokeswoman Kelly Lessard says wolf got out onto a trail Wednesday morning. She says the area was evacuated, and the wolf was shot because it was considered a danger to people.

No people were hurt and the wolf never left the zoo grounds in suburban Apple Valley. All areas were soon reopened.

Lessard says officials are trying to determine how it escaped.

Mary Woestehoff. of Richfield, was there with her 18-month-old daughter. She says she spotted the wolf running about 100 feet ahead of them. She picked her toddler up and went to an emergency phone.

But she says the wolf looked like a "scared dog" and wanted nothing to do with people.
