Northland Community and Technical College is preparing for the possibility of a government shutdown. 107 employees will receive layoff notices Friday on the East Grand Forks and Thief River Falls campuses.

Those employees who will recieve those notices are non-faculty. They work in areas that include student services, technology and maintenance.

Those notices would only become effective if there was no budget agreement in Minnesota before the end of this month.

There is a reserve cash fund that the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System could use to keep operating during a shutdown, but Governor Mark Dayton has yet to OK it.

"Up to this point, he has said neither yes nor no. And if we don't have access to those cash reserves, we will shut down just like any other state agency," NCTC president Anne Temte said.

Temte says even if the shutdown is avoided, there we be valuable time that is lost for all of the workers having to spend time preparing for it.
