MINOT, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Board of Higher Education has delayed talks with Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem on the status of the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname.

Stenehjem intended to meet with the board Thursday in Minot. Instead he has to attend a meeting of the state Industrial Commission in Bismarck.

Board President Jon Backes (BAH'-kus) says Stenehjem is willing to meet with the board later.

A new law requires UND to keep its Fighting Sioux nickname, even though the NCAA says it's hostile to American Indians.

The nickname is causing problems with UND's bid to join the Big Sky athletics conference.

Presidents of the Big Sky colleges are meeting in October. Backes believes if the issue isn't resolved, UND could have problems joining the conference.
