MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The new president of North Dakota's Board of Higher Education says he's expecting to meet soon with NCAA officials to discuss the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname.

Grand Forks attorney Grant Shaft succeeded Minot lawyer Jon Backes in the job on Thursday. Backes leaves the board this month.

A new law says UND must keep its Fighting Sioux nickname, even though the NCAA says it's hostile to American Indians.

The law is causing problems with UND's attempt to join the Big Sky athletics conference.

Big Sky college presidents are meeting in October. Shaft believes if the issue isn't resolved, UND could have problems joining the conference.

Shaft says UND is trying to arrange a meeting between school officials, legislative leaders, Gov. Jack Dalrymple and the NCAA.
