SAWYER, N.D. (AP) — A city official in Minot says the North Dakota town of Sawyer is under an immediate mandatory evacuation because of Souris River flooding.

Minot Fire Department Capt. Dean Lenertz made the announcement late Saturday morning.

Earlier Saturday, Mayor Cy Kotaska (koh-TASS'-kah) told KFGO radio that National Guard soldiers are busy working on a secondary levee after water from the Souris River overtopped the main dike about daybreak.

He had said that only three homes on the city's west side so far had been flooded, but the water was up to the roofs of those houses.

He says the water is coming in fast, and crews are busy building the secondary dike.

The city of about 350 people sounded its emergency siren when the breach occurred.
