A Texas man, who is a suspect in a homicide, was arrested after authorities say he tried to flee to Canada through the Pembina border crossing.
KVUE-TV reports that 27-year-old Joe Carr is a suspect in the homicide case of 22-year-old Veronica Navaro.
Navaro's body was found floating in a Texas lake just before noon last Wednesday, her body wrapped in a tent and weighted down by a paint can, the local Sheriff's Office said.
"My immediate reaction is that it must be a mistake. It can't be Joe. I was in disbelief and I'm still in a level of disbelief. I couldn't imagine Joe ever doing anything close to what he's being accused of," Mark Warren, Assistant Chief with the Pedernales Fire Department, told KXAN-TV. Carr worked as a firefighter there.
A Travis County sheriff's department representative says that Carr and Navarro had been involved in a romantic relationship and had shared a house not too far from where the woman's body was found.
Canadian authorities alerted sheriff's department officials that Carr had been detained at the crossing. He was taken to the Pembina County Jail, where he's being held on $100,000 bond.
