BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The man accused of killing a Bismarck police officer made his initial appearance in court Wednesday afternoon.

Fifty-two-year-old Steven G. Bannister is charged with murder in the shooting death of 56-year-old Sgt. Steven Kenner.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that bannister limped slightly as he entered the courtroom, but it was not apparent whether it was due to restraints or injuries. He had sores on his head and face, including a large cut over his right eye and a bandage on his right wrist.

South Central District Judge Donald Jorgensen ordered Bannister held without bond.

Kenner was shot and killed late Friday responding to a domestic disturbance call. He was the first Bismarck officer killed on the job and the first North Dakota officer to die on duty in 15 years.
