BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Grand Forks state Sen. Mac Schneider says he's not planning to run for the U.S. Senate next year.

Instead, Schneider says he wants to run for re-election to his North Dakota Senate seat.

Incumbent Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad is stepping down next year and Democrats don't have a candidate for Conrad's job.

Killdeer businesswoman and Democratic activist Kristin Hedger sent a letter to North Dakota newspapers on Monday backing Schneider as a U.S. Senate candidate.

Hedger says Schneider has a strong record as a state lawmaker, and he's already familiar with Washington. Schneider is a onetime aide to former Democratic Congressman Earl Pomeroy.

Hedger is a former Democratic candidate for secretary of state.

Former state Rep. Pam Gulleson says she's considering a Senate run. She hasn't announced a campaign.
