Fall camp in Grand Forks is underway, and the Fighting Sioux have quite a battle going for the most important spot on the field.
Three quarterbacks, one starting job.
"I expect to be the starting quarterback come September first," Brent Goska said.
"I want to be the starting quarterback so I'm working, I'm working now," Marcus Hendrickson said.
"If you come out here thinking I want to be the number two then this isnt the sport for you," Joey Bradley said.
Goska started four games last season, making him the most experienced Sioux QB to return. But he knew that he would still have to earn the starting position.
"Being a senior I've seen a lot of different things. Getting the playing experience last year and even the year before I think is gonna help coming into this year, the experience level. I always knew there was the posibility of them bringing in a junior college kid like Joey," Goska said.
Enter Joey Bradley. Another player with experience after a year in junior college calling the shots for Diablo Valley.
"I feel like experience with leadership. I've kinda been there done that, I've started a game, finished a game," Bradley said.
And don't forget about Junior Marcus Hendrickson who says he has one thing the others don't.
"I feel like I'm a little more mobile than them. So we just try to focus on ourselves, make the right reads, the right throws. Work on mechanics and stay fundamentally sharp," Hendrickson said.
Because each QB brings a different skill set to the table, head coach Chris Mussman still isn't sure who is going to be starting under center and who will be on the sidelines.
"It's going to be a process. All of those guys have some great qualities, all of them have some weaknesses. But we'll try to get all three guys quality reps," Mussman said.
Right now Goska is still at the top of the depth chart with Bradley and Hendrickson right on his heels.
And as far as a timetable goes, you may want to grab a seat because this could take a while. Mussman said he'll name the starter by August 28, just four days before the season opener.
That season opener is on Thursday, September 1 as the Sioux host Drake.
