An East Grand Forks man who pleaded guilty to numerous identity theft charges was sentenced Wednesday in Grand Forks County Court.

Troy Lafferty, 28, will serve five years in prison. He was also sentenced to 10 years of supervised probation. He'll get credit for 97 days served in jail.

Lafferty pleaded guilty to nineteen felony counts of identity theft and one felony count of theft of property.

A plea agreement would have had Lafferty serve only one year in jail, but after he was charged with breaking into Altru and stealing prescription slips, the agreement was withdrawn.

In late September of last year, Lafferty was arrested at his store TechMedics at 1003 S. Washington St. after police executed search warrants at his home in East Grand Forks.

If Lafferty doesn't adhere to the conditions of probation, he could face another five years in prison.
