MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Navy SEAL from Minneapolis was among the 30 U.S. troops killed when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan last week, making him the second known Minnesota casualty of the attack.

Thirty-one year-old Chief Petty Officer John Faas was the 1998 class valedictorian at Minnehaha Academy and the football team's quarterback. The Pentagon confirmed his death Thursday.

His family says Faas was a man of unquestionable integrity and courage, as were those he served with. They say he became a SEAL to serve his country and to make the world a better place for those less fortunate.

Another SEAL from Minnesota, 24-year-old Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicholas Spehar, of Chisago City, was reported by family earlier as killed in Saturday's crash. The Defense Department also confirmed his death Thursday.
