Pat Sweeney

Pat is a St. Paul native who graduated with a journalism degree from that city's College of St. Thomas. Pat started his broadcasting career on the studio crew of KTCA-TV (PBS) in St. Paul. He also worked as a Minneapolis Tribune copy editor, and as an announcer and sportscaster at two suburban Twin Cities radio stations. Pat moved to North Dakota in 1980, working at Williston's KUMV-TV and Dickinson's KQCD-TV before coming to WDAZ in 1982.

Pat became Channel 8 sports director in 1983. From 1984 to 2012, Pat served as the play-by-play voice of University of North Dakota hockey, football, and basketball telecasts produced by WDAZ. His work has been seen nationally on ESPNU, NHL Network and Fox College Sports. He also worked 28 years as host and/or producer of WDAZ's University of North Dakota coaches' shows.

Pat is a three-time North Dakota Sportscaster of the Year recipient, and his work for WDAZ News during the 1997 flood disaster helped WDAZ win a 1998 Edward R. Murrow Award for spot news coverage.
