Al Leighton, Founder of Leighton Broadcasting, Dies at 86

(WDAZ-TV) - The founder of Leighton Broadcasting, Al Leighton, has died. The 86-year-old passed away Thursday. Leighton started his broadcasting company in 1963 with the station KDLM-AM in Detroit Lakes, MN.

(WDAZ-TV) - The founder of Leighton Broadcasting, Al Leighton, has died. The 86-year-old passed away Thursday.

Leighton started his broadcasting company in 1963 with the station KDLM-AM in Detroit Lakes, MN.

He owned stations in Iowa, Minnesota, Texas and North Dakota, including five stations here in Grand Forks. They include Talk Radio 1310 KNOX-AM and Lite Rock 104.3 FM.

Leighton worked as the CEO of Leighton Broadcasting until he was 81.

He started broadcasting in 1951.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2012 in St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud.

Rev. Anthony Oelrich will officiate at the service and a private family interment will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.
