A polar vortex is to blame for putting the Red River Valley, and the rest of the country in a deep freeze. While the region is still under a wind chill warning, officials say conditions will improve this weekend.
GF beats Bismarck, Fargo for the 2nd top spot
(WDAZ-TV) - While we're finally dealing with truly cold temperatures in the region, a popular news website says Grand Forks is the second coldest city in the country, right behind Fairbanks, AK.
The National Weather Service has issued wind chill warning for the area, remaining in effect until noon on Wednesday.
The NWS says bitterly cold arctic air has settled over the northern plains. Frigid temperatures are combining with winds of up to 15 mph.
Winter weather and wind chill advisories for Thursday make staying inside sound like a great idea. Not everyone can, of course, and students who go to classes everyday at the University of North Dakota typically do not have that choice.
