Some are calling it a breathtaking leap forward -- North Dakota voters elected the state's first openly gay legislator. He's Democrat Josh Boschee from North Fargo, who was elected as a representative in the state's house.
With a very close presidential election, a hotly contested US Senate race and a series of controversial issues on the ballot, heavy turnout is expected at polling sites throughout North Dakota and Minnesota. Here in Grand Forks thousands of voters showed up to cast their ballots just in the first few hours polls were open this morning.
Along with a high-profile U.S. Senate race, North Dakota's election includes contests for the governor's office, the state's only U.S. House seat and other statewide offices. Five initiatives also are on the ballot.
A record number of voters are expected to show up at the polls nationwide. About 30 million people have already voted in 34 states and the District of Columbia. With just one day before the election, there is reason to believe North Dakota could also see a record turnout.
Democratic US House candidate Pam Gulleson is also a part of the "Bring It Home Heidi" bus tour.
The candidate is running against Republican opponent Kevin Cramer who is also hitting the pavement, traveling around the State before election day.
Minnesota got a late burst of attention Sunday from the two presidential campaigns, as former President Bill Clinton stumped for the Obama campaign in St. Cloud while Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan rallied at the Minneapolis airport.
As election day nears North Dakota candidates are doing everything they can to win over voters. Senator John McCain endorsed Republican Senatorial Candidate Rick Berg this evening at a rally in Grand Forks.
Even though she’s never met him, the governor of Washington state has endorsed challenger Wayne Gregoire for mayor of East Grand Forks. The Washington governor is Chris Gregoire, whose husband is Mike Gregoire, a first-cousin of the City Council member who is opposing Mayor Lynn Stauss.
