It's an exciting sight for anglers in the lake region, Devils Lake finally covered in ice. But fishing experts warn that ice season isn't heating up yet just because the water has cooled. Devils Lake is almost completely frozen, thanks to a cold snap this weekend, but the ice is still way too thin to head out on to just yet.
More people are fishing in North Dakota. Last year a record number of resident and non resident fishing licenses were sold in the state. Greg Power with the North Dakota Game and Fish says about 218,000 licenses were sold last year. The previous record for resident sales was set back in 1982.
One year ago today boats were cruising on clear water on Devils Lake, but today the lake remains covered with more than 30 inches of ice. With those good ice conditions, fishing experts are telling anglers to keep their winter gear handy for at least the next few weeks.
New laws aimed at stopping the spread of invasive species are forcing some changes to the Cats Incredible fishing tournament. The tournament will be smaller this year, and anglers will only be launching their boats in Minnesota.
